Confirmation Mass DRESS CODE

At the Sacrament of Baptism we wear special gowns, the Sacrament of First Communion we wear white dresses or suit, at our Marriage we wear formal gowns or tuxedos. It is fitting to dress in celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation as well.

While the church greatly respects the uniqueness and individuality in each of its members, it holds that modesty is a fruits of the Holy Spirit and that “Teaching modesty to children and adolescents means awakening in them respect for the human person.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 25234)

It is in this spirit of fostering respect for each other and for sanctity of the Sacrament of Confirmation that we set forth a code of dress consistent with our culture’s view of modesty.

Semi-formal, modest attire is appropriate to the solemn beauty of this occasion.

YOUNG MEN

Appropriate Attire: Suit or dress pants, dress shirt, tie. Jacket is optional, but preferred. White shirt, black or blue pants, and red tie is common for Confirmation.

Inappropriate Attire: Tennis shoes, jeans, t-shirts, polos, tuxedos.

YOUNG WOMEN

Appropriate Attire: Modest dress, skirt and blouse, pant suit or dress pants and blouse (dress or skirt must be knee length or longer; chest, back and shoulders must be covered - a dressy sweater or wrap is an acceptable solution); dress shoes. White and red are common, appropriate colors for Confirmation.

Inappropriate Attire: strapless dresses, mini-skirts, jeans, extremely tight or low-cut dresses, formal evening gowns.

SPECIFIC QUESTIONS?

If you’re not sure if something is appropriate for the Mass, feel free to bring a picture to a catechist for them to give the “ok”.

EASTER VIGIL MASS SPECIFICS (CHILDREN)

For those receiving Baptism at the Easter Vigil, they will be baptized with what is called a sprinkling rite, where they’ll be baptized over the font and not fully-immersed. Therefore, they can dress in their Easter Best, preferably in white to show their new life in Baptism (see dress code outlined for Confirmation Mass).

EASTER VIGIL MASS SPECIFICS (TEENS & ADULTS)

For those receiving Baptism at the Easter Vigil, we have a change of clothes required. They’ll show up in a black shirt and pants that are not see-through when wet. They’ll also need black shoes or sandals that can easily be removed.

The first portion of the Mass, where they’ll experience full-immersion baptism, will be done in this outfit. Then they’ll have the opportunity to change into a dry set of clothes. Lighter colored, easy-to-slip-on clothes are required. We will be wearing white albs over them, so they don’t need to be formal at all, just easy to change into.

We will rejoin the Mass where they’ll receive their other Sacraments.

At the end of Mass, we will do a group picture with all catechumens in their albs. Afterwards, you may change into Easter Sunday best (see dress code outlined for Confirmation Mass) if you’d like to take pictures all dressed up (or even just take any additional photos in the alb).
